Raja (Sharat Babu), is crazy about plays, and is in love with Ranganayaki (Meena), a theatre artiste. Muthu (Rajnikanth), his servant, rescues Ranganayaki from thugs and she falls in love with him. Its hell to pay for Muhtu when his master Raja discovers their love-affair. A more shocking revelation stops their fight but creates a whole new set of problems...

A R Rehman provides the scintillating background score for the film. Muthu is perhaps the only Indian film to do well in Japan, making Rajnikanth and Meena household names there!
